Why not move everything to virtuality?

I recently read the AI Revolution Series and the Elon Musk Series on WaitButWhy. All a bit long-termed, isn’t it?

The series

The AI series makes us afraid of the Great Filter and the Elon Musk series sheds some light on what he is doing about it. Elon sees this Great Filter as the human beings most important (not necessarily most urgent) problem and tackles it with SpaceX, Tesla and OpenAI: We need to make a backup of the Earth’s civilisation on Mars and eventually become an interstellar species. In the meantime it would be great if we wouldn’t extinguish ourselves with climate change and AI.

This seems to be a lot of work. Couldn’t there be an easier way?

My shortcut

Wouldn’t the easiest, fastest and final solution be to just lock everyone up in virtuality? Why not just stop the world now and move on virtually?

We could basically start today. Get an Oculus and never take it off again. The experience would be pretty shit now but I guess it would improve as soon as technology improved. Or alternatively we just get used to it. The virtual space is so much vaster and still easier to conquer than the real one that not only humans could be tricked into it being a more desirable space but also machines. Humanity and Uber-AIs would live in a dream-castor — problem solved (except maybe for the alien invasions).

Did Tim from WhaitButWhy touch this idea already somewhere?
